Samos had been forcibly depopulated in 365 BC when Athens expelled the island's inhabitants and installed Athenian cleruchs — a brutal displacement that lasted until Alexander the Great's death in 323 BC triggered the restoration of the Samians to their homeland. This didrachm, struck in the decade immediately following that return, belongs to the city's monetary resumption after roughly four decades of suppressed civic identity. The magistrate name Leontiskos appears in the coin's inscription, placing it within a known sequence of eponymous officials used to date the early post-restoration issues.
