Obverse description Head of the nymph Hyele facing right, rendered in fine Greek style with long wavy hair swept back and gathered into a large round sphendone behind the neck, with loose tresses falling forward onto the shoulder. The facial features are delicately modeled with a straight profile nose and slightly parted lips. The legend YEΛH appears in Greek characters in the left and lower field, identifying the city of Velia. The flan is slightly irregular, characteristic of hand-struck South Italian coinage of this period.
