Johannes Jordan served as Bishop of Sion from 1548 until his death in 1565, governing a see whose coinage rights were perpetually contested between the bishop and the seven dizains — the democratic assemblies of the Valais cantons. The Dicken was the standard large silver denomination of the Swiss monetary system in this period, adopted across numerous cantons and ecclesiastical lordships as trade with northern Italy demanded heavier silver currency.
The dating range of 1549–1557 suggests production across multiple die pairs rather than a single campaign.
