Arados — the Phoenician island city known to the Greeks as Aradus — operated with unusual autonomy under Seleucid overlordship, retaining its own civic bronze coinage throughout the third and second centuries BC. The city's maritime economy depended entirely on its harbor, and its bronze fractional issues circulated primarily as port currency, handling the small transactions of a busy Levantine trading entrepôt rather than regional commerce.

The dichalkos denomination itself is a subdivided unit rarely attested with such consistency across a municipal series. The near-century span of this type reflects civic continuity rather than a single issue — successive magistrates oversaw production while the basic types remained fixed.
