Sardes, the ancient Lydian capital long associated with Croesus and the invention of coinage itself, continued striking civic bronze well into the Roman provincial period. This dichalkon belongs to a long municipal series issued under the authority of the demos, spanning the late Seleucid withdrawal from the region through the early Principate — a stretch of nearly 150 years during which Sardes navigated the transition from Attalid bequest to direct Roman administration following the dissolution of the Pergamene kingdom in 133 BC.
The SNG Copenhagen 502 reference places this piece within a well-documented but rarely precisely dated civic sequence.
