Artaxias I founded the independent Armenian kingdom around 190 BC after the collapse of Seleucid authority following their defeat at Magnesia, carving out a domain he would expand aggressively through the annexation of surrounding territories — a campaign Greek sources describe as absorbing lands from neighboring peoples on every frontier. His coinage is rare by any measure, and the dichalkon denomination in particular survives in small numbers, likely reflecting limited monetization of the Armenian economy at this early stage of the kingdom's independence. Kovacs 38 is among the foundational references for attributing this series.
