Artaxias I ruled Armenia as a client king under Seleucid authority — Antiochus IV installed him around 189 BC following Rome's defeat of Antiochus III at Magnesia, a settlement that reorganized client kingdoms across the region. The bronze coinage attributed to this pairing reflects that dependency, struck in a kingdom that was politically subordinate but administratively functional. Kovacs 39 is among the less common varieties in the series.
