Apameia on the Orontes was one of the great Seleucid foundations, but by the late second century BC the city was operating under increasing Roman shadow following the Treaty of Apamea in 188 BC — a settlement that had already stripped the region of its geopolitical autonomy decades before this coin was struck. The magistrate names Andronikos and Alkion appear as a pairing on this civic bronze, a practice common to Syrian municipal issues where dual magistracies provided administrative legitimacy during the slow collapse of Seleucid central authority.
HGC 7, 670 places this type within a sequence of Apameian bronzes extending into the mid-first century BC, well into the period of Roman provincial reorganization under Pompey in 64 BC.
