Karthaia occupied the southeastern tip of Keos, one of the Cycladic islands closest to Attica, and by the Hellenistic period was already in slow demographic decline relative to its neighbor Ioulis. Civic bronze issues like this dichalkon were local fractional currency, circulating within a tightly bounded community that was shrinking in political relevance even as it continued to strike its own coinage.
SNG Copenhagen 634 places this type firmly within the established sequence for the mint, though Karthaia's bronzes are infrequently documented in die studies compared to more prominent island mints.
