正面描述 Facing left, the head of a lion rendered in high relief, with boldly modelled mane depicted in radiating curls filling the right portion of the flan. The musculature of the jaw and brow is crisply detailed, characteristic of the vigorous archaic-to-classical Greek bronzework associated with Thessalian mints. The design is contained within a border of dots encircling the field.

附加信息

Herakleia Trachinia was a Spartan foundation, established in 426 BC at the urging of the Trachinians and against the advice of Corinth and Thebes. Sparta used it as a forward base in central Greece, but the colony lurched from crisis to crisis — massacred by neighboring Thessalians and Ainianes in 395 BC, briefly seized by Thebes in 379 BC, and never truly stable. Bronze coinage from this mint, struck in the decades following Spartan withdrawal, reflects a city operating with genuine autonomy for perhaps the first time.

The BCD Thessaly II reference places this piece within one of the most rigorously documented regional collections ever assembled.
