Herakleia Trachinia was a Spartan foundation, established in 426 BC at the urging of the Trachinians and against the advice of Corinth and Thebes. Sparta used it as a forward base in central Greece, but the colony lurched from crisis to crisis — massacred by neighboring Thessalians and Ainianes in 395 BC, briefly seized by Thebes in 379 BC, and never truly stable. Bronze coinage from this mint, struck in the decades following Spartan withdrawal, reflects a city operating with genuine autonomy for perhaps the first time.
