Obverse description Central field features a plain cross with a pellet in each angle, a characteristic device of early Capetian royal coinage. The cross divides the flan into four quadrants, each containing a small annulet or pellet. The circumferential Latin legend + ROTBERT REX encircles the design, identifying the issuer as King Robert. The lettering is rendered in a somewhat irregular hand typical of early medieval hammered coinage, and the flan itself is slightly uneven in shape, consistent with hand-struck production.
