Ramon Berenguer I of Barcelona acquired Carcassonne through his wife Almodis de la Marche in 1067, absorbing the viscountcy into the Barcelonese sphere at a moment when Catalan comital power was aggressively expanding northward into Languedoc. The joint attribution to Ramon Berenguer I and his grandson Ramon Berenguer II reflects the shared authority formalized after the elder count's death in 1076, when the county of Barcelona passed simultaneously to twin sons — and then to the next generation — under arrangements that kept Carcassonne's mint operating under a Barcelona-affiliated name throughout the transition.
