Alberic II ruled Rome not as pope or emperor but as "prince and senator of all the Romans" — a title he effectively invented to legitimize his stranglehold over the city from 932 until his death in 954. He suppressed papal temporal authority so completely that he forced five successive popes to function as purely spiritual figures, stripped of political agency. This denier, struck in his own name, is the physical assertion of that arrangement.
His father, Alberic I of Spoleto, had briefly held Rome before him, but it was Alberic II who institutionalized dynastic control — even engineering the election of his own illegitimate son Octavian as Pope John XII on his deathbed.
