| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field dominated by the Carolingian royal monogram of Pepin the Short, composed of interlaced letters surmounted by a horizontal bar, rendered in bold relief characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The monogram combines the letters R and F, standing for Rex Francorum (King of the Franks), in a stylized interlace typical of the period. The flan is irregular in outline, with a slightly granular field surface consistent with hand-struck silver deniers of the mid-eighth century. No border of dots or decorative rim is present, the design filling the available flan to its irregular edges. |
