| Popis rubu | The reverse presents the mint name VIIRDUII (Verdun) arranged in two horizontal lines of text separated by a central horizontal dividing bar, the whole flanked on the left by a small crosslet. The lettering is rendered in the angular, somewhat primitive majuscule script characteristic of Carolingian provincial mints of the mid-eighth century, with individual letters of variable height and spacing. The coin's irregular flan and granular silver surface are consistent with the hammered technique employed at Frankish mints under Pepin the Short. A beaded border is visible around the rim on this face. |
