Surrounding the central character, the mint or ecclesiastical legend is distributed around the field in a circular arrangement. Additional letters and ligatures appear in the peripheral areas, rendered in a rough, hand-cut style consistent with hammered provincial issues. The overall layout reflects the attribution to the ecclesiastical mint of Saint Mary at Laon. |
