Reverse description A large retrograde letter S occupies the central field, executed in a stylised, sinuous form typical of early medieval Carolingian die-cutting. Surrounding the central character, the mint or ecclesiastical legend is distributed around the field in a circular arrangement. Additional letters and ligatures appear in the peripheral areas, rendered in a rough, hand-cut style consistent with hammered provincial issues. The overall layout reflects the attribution to the ecclesiastical mint of Saint Mary at Laon.
