| Obverse description | Central field dominated by an interlaced monogram composed of the letters R, P, and N in bold relief, reading as the royal cipher of Rex Pepinus (King Pepin). The monogram is executed in a characteristic Carolingian uncial style with an elongated vertical stroke linking the letterforms. A small pellet is placed to the lower center of the monogram, flanked by the letters. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border of evenly spaced pellets, a typical decorative feature of Carolingian hammered coinage. The flan is slightly irregular, consistent with hand-struck silver deniers of the mid-eighth century. |
