Pépin III's reform of Frankish coinage after 755 — consolidating minting authority away from scattered ecclesiastical and aristocratic workshops and back toward royal control — is precisely why the Saint-Denis mint matters here. The abbey held exceptional commercial importance as the site of the annual Lendit fair, giving this particular mint a circulation reach that extended well beyond the Île-de-France. Pépin's denier established the weight standard that Charlemagne would later inherit and codify, making this issue the direct prototype for the entire Carolingian monetary system that dominated Western Europe for two centuries.
