| Beschrijving keerzijde | The mint name GADDO (identifying the mint of Gado or Quentovic area as attributed in Carolingian references) is inscribed in two lines across the field in bold Carolingian capital letters: GAD in the upper line and DO in the lower, with the G rendered in a distinctive angular form. The lettering fills the flan with characteristic early medieval spacing, set against a plain, unadorned field on an irregular hammered planchet. |

Pépin III — the first Carolingian king, who deposed the last Merovingian ruler Childeric III in 751 with papal sanction — overhauled Frankish coinage by moving from the small, debased sceattas of late Merovingian practice toward a broader, thinner silver penny. The GADDO mint attribution remains debated among specialists; Gariel placed it tentatively in the Gascony region, though the identification has never been conclusively settled. Morrison's corpus remains the standard reference for resolving such attributions, and even there the assignment carries qualifications.
