Pépin III — the first Carolingian king, who deposed the last Merovingian ruler Childeric III in 751 with papal sanction — overhauled Frankish coinage by moving from the small, debased sceattas of late Merovingian practice toward a broader, thinner silver penny. The GADDO mint attribution remains debated among specialists; Gariel placed it tentatively in the Gascony region, though the identification has never been conclusively settled.
