Obverse description Central field bearing a plain cross with a pellet in each of the four angles, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading PIPPINVS REXEQ, is disposed around the periphery in the characteristic Carolingian hammered style. The lettering is somewhat irregular in spacing and execution, consistent with hand-struck coinage of the mid-ninth century.
