The surrounding legend OTTO MARCHI runs in the outer field, identifying the issuer as Otto, Margrave of Brandenburg, rendered in the angular Gothic minuscule lettering characteristic of late 13th-century North German coinage. The flan is notably irregular, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. The design is typical of the denier type issued by the Ascanian margraves of Brandenburg during the second half of the 13th century. |
