Meinhard II spent much of his reign methodically consolidating Tyrolean territory through inheritance, marriage alliances, and outright purchase — including acquiring the county of Tyrol itself in 1263. His minting activity was part of the same program: controlling small silver coinage was essential to administering alpine trade routes, particularly the Brenner Pass, which he worked to bring under unified jurisdiction throughout the 1270s and 1280s.
At 0.27g, these deniers represent the thin end of medieval alpine silver coinage, struck at a time when regional fragmentation meant dozens of competing issues circulated simultaneously across the same mountain corridors.
