Meinhard II spent much of his reign methodically consolidating Tyrolean territory through inheritance, marriage alliances, and outright purchase — including acquiring the county of Tyrol itself in 1263. His minting activity was part of the same program: controlling small silver coinage was essential to administering alpine trade routes, particularly the Brenner Pass, which he worked to bring under unified jurisdiction throughout the 1270s and 1280s.
