In two diagonally opposite angles appear the letter S, and in the remaining two angles crescent symbols each adorned with a central pellet. A circular outer legend in uncial characters reads SIMON ME FECIT, attributing the striking of the coin to a moneyer named Simon. The overall design is consistent with feudal French deniers of the mid-to-late 12th century, with characteristic bold strokes and irregular hammer-struck flan. |
