Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian city monogram of Rome, composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the bold, angular style characteristic of 9th-century Carolingian coinage. A circumscribed Latin legend in the outer annulus reads ROMA and MARINI PP, identifying the city of Rome and Pope Marinus, separated by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-struck hammered production of the period.
