| 裏面の説明 | Central field displays the Carolingian royal KRLS monogram — the interlaced cipher of Karolus (Charles) — set within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is boldly struck in the Carolingian chancellery style, with interlocking capital letters clearly visible in relief. The surrounding outer legend reads KAROLVS and SCS PETRVS, invoking Emperor Charles and Saint Peter as co-authorities of this papal issue, separated by a cross. The overall fabric is characteristic of a hammered silver denier of the Roman mint under joint papal-imperial authority. |

Marinus I served as pope from 882 to 884, and this joint issue with Charles III — Charles the Fat, the last Carolingian to briefly reunite the Frankish empire — reflects the political entanglement between the papacy and a failing dynasty. Charles was deposed in 887, declared incapable of ruling by his own nobles at Tribur, and died within weeks. The coinage partnership captured here lasted barely two years before the entire Carolingian framework it depended upon collapsed entirely.
