Vic's copper coinage of 1642 sits in the middle of one of the messiest monetary situations in Catalan history. That year, Catalonia was formally under French protection following the Corpus de Sang revolt of 1640, which had expelled Castilian forces and handed nominal sovereignty to Louis XIII — yet many Catalan minting authorities hedged, striking coins that acknowledged French suzerainty while retaining iconographic ties to the Habsburg tradition they had just violently rejected.
The municipality of Vic operated with unusual autonomy throughout the 1640s conflict. French control over the region tightened progressively after Louis XIII's death in 1643, making this particular issue a product of the earliest, most uncertain phase of the occupation.
