The surrounding legend reads LVDOVVICVS IMP, identifying the issuer as Louis, Emperor, and runs clockwise between the inner beaded circle and the outer border of the flan. The lettering is rendered in a bold, somewhat irregular Carolingian majuscule typical of early tenth-century hammered coinage.
