The lettering is rendered in the characteristic irregular, angular Beneventan hand of the period, with letters filling the available space in a manner typical of southern Italian Carolingian deniers. A surrounding circular legend completes the epigraphic composition. The inscription records Angelberga's imperial dignity as consort of Louis II, making this coin a rare example of a jointly-issued Carolingian issue commemorating both emperor and empress. |
