The lettering, executed in bold Carolingian capitals, reads clockwise and is enclosed between an inner beaded ring and an outer beaded border. The overall design is characteristic of the Temple/Cross type coinage of Louis the Pious, emphasizing religious authority through the prominent cross motif. The flan is irregular in outline, as typical of hand-struck medieval issues, and the relief is moderately strong throughout. |
