| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central shield bearing the twofold coat of arms of Hungary, divided vertically with the Árpád stripes on the dexter side and the patriarchal double cross on the sinister side, rendered in a Gothic heraldic style typical of 14th-century Hungarian coinage. The shield occupies the majority of the coin's field and is surrounded by a circular legend in uncial Latin script. The irregular flan and hammered technique impart a characteristically medieval irregular outline to the piece. |

Louis I — "the Great" — came to the Hungarian throne in 1342 and immediately pursued an aggressive expansionist policy, fighting two wars against Naples to press his dynastic claim and campaigning deep into the Balkans. These small silver deniers were the working currency of that ambition, financing armies across terrain that stretched from Poland to the Adriatic. The ÉH#424 / H#535 pairing places this piece within a tightly defined emission window corresponding to his earliest consolidation of royal monetary administration before the coinage reforms of the late 1350s.
