Louis I — "the Great" — came to the Hungarian throne in 1342 and immediately pursued an aggressive expansionist policy, fighting two wars against Naples to press his dynastic claim and campaigning deep into the Balkans. These small silver deniers were the working currency of that ambition, financing armies across terrain that stretched from Poland to the Adriatic.
