Obverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular field carries the ruler's name and title in Latin capital letters, commencing with a cross pattée. The legend reads +HLOTHARIVS HPERA, referring to Lothair I as emperor. The die-cutting displays the bold, somewhat rustic lettering characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage of the early ninth century.

Reverse description The reverse presents the mint name DORESTATUS arranged horizontally across the field in three lines of bold Latin capitals: DOR on the uppermost line, ES.TA on the middle line, and TVS on the lower line, filling the flan in the characteristic Carolingian palace-type format. The lettering is large and occupies virtually the entire reverse field without an enclosing circle, a typical feature of Dorestad mint issues of this period. The flan shows the irregular planchet shape and surface texture consistent with hand-hammered production.
