| Obverse description | Central plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms are bold and slightly raised, characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. A circular legend in large Carolingian capitals runs between the beaded circle and the irregular coin edge, reading the emperor's name and title. The overall style reflects the standardized Carolingian denier type introduced under Charlemagne and continued under his successors. |
