Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the abbreviated papal title PAPA is rendered in bold hammered letters at the centre of the field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded circle, reading DOM IOHANES with a cross pattée as punctuation, identifying the issuing authority as Pope John XII. The lettering is irregular and somewhat crude in execution, characteristic of early medieval Roman ecclesiastical coinage struck by the hammer method. The overall design is flat and emblematic, with no figurative imagery on this side.
