Beschrijving voorzijde Central device consisting of two stylized palm trees with spreading fronds issuing from a common base, rendered in a schematic, early medieval style characteristic of Carolingian-influenced papal coinage. A small cross or monogram device appears at the junction of the two trunks in the lower field. The flan is irregular and somewhat broad, with the design occupying most of the available field. The surface shows extensive wear and patination consistent with the coin's age and circulation history.

Aanvullende informatie

John XI held the papacy under extraordinary constraint — his pontificate was effectively controlled by his half-brother Alberic II, who seized temporal power in Rome in 932 and reduced the pope to purely ceremonial religious functions. Whether coins issued under his name reflect genuine papal monetary authority or Alberic's administration is a question the numismatic record cannot cleanly answer. This denier sits at that precise fault line.

The CNI XV gap reference signals no recorded specimen in that corpus at time of publication — a meaningful absence for a type that Muntoni could at least partially document.
