John III inherited the Viscounty of Limoges through his mother Yolanda, who held it as a dependency of the Duchy of Brittany — an arrangement that made Limoges coinage an assertion of ducal reach into a geographically distant lordship. The joint naming of Isabel of Castile, his wife, on the coinage was uncommon for viscounty-level issues and likely reflects deliberate political signaling during a period when John was navigating relationships with both the French crown and Iberian allies.
