The quadrants formed by the cross arms are filled with decorative elements in the Gothic provincial style typical of Epirote coinage. A circular beaded inner border frames the central device, with the Latin legend IOhS DESPOTVS distributed around the periphery. The flan is characteristically irregular, struck on a roughly rounded planchet with uneven edges. The overall workmanship reflects the modest billon coinage of the Despotate of Epirus under John II Orsini. |
