Hermann I ruled Swabia from 926 until his death in 949, appointed by Henry I of East Francia as part of the systematic consolidation of ducal authority across the German stem duchies. His coinage at Breisach draws on Carolingian denier conventions that were already aging awkwardly by the 930s — a regional minting tradition holding onto forms that the major royal mints were beginning to abandon.
Breisach's position on the Rhine made it strategically and commercially significant, but output from this mint was modest. Surviving examples attributed firmly to Hermann I are genuinely scarce.
