| Descrizione del dritto | Central field occupied by a pointed shield bearing a lion rampant to the left, rendered in the bold, angular style characteristic of 13th-century Low Countries hammered coinage. The shield is depicted with a beaded or hatched border, and the lion's tail is forked and raised. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the shield, reading the lord's name. The overall design is typical of the feudal denier tradition of the Meuse valley, with irregular flan and die-struck relief. |

Herstal, a small lordship wedged between the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and the County of Namur, passed to Henry of Leuven through inheritance lines that were perpetually contested by the Liège episcopate. Henry held the lordship for only three years before his death in 1285, making this denier one of the shortest-lived issues in the lower Meuse regional coinage sequence. The multiple reference concordances — vdCh, VanH, Lucas, and Dengis all cataloguing it separately — reflect how actively scholars of Mosan numismatics have worked to untangle the dense web of small feudal issues from this corridor.
