| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device consisting of a six-armed star or sexfoil motif enclosed within a beaded inner circle, a Marian devotional emblem associated with the patronage of the Maastricht mint under the collegiate church of Our Lady. The star's arms radiate symmetrically from the centre, rendered in low relief on an irregular hammered flan. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded border, reading + SCA MARIA, invoking the Virgin Mary as the mint's patron saint. The design is characteristic of the episcopal and imperial coinage of the Lower Lotharingian region in the early eleventh century. Strike and flan quality are typical of contemporary circulation-grade issues. |
