Historical Context: This Denier was issued under Henri V the Blonde, Count of Luxembourg (1247-1281), a pivotal figure asserting sovereignty within the Holy Roman Empire. His reign saw significant territorial expansion for Luxembourg. This silver coinage served as the primary medium of exchange, underpinning the county's economic life. Its issuance reflects the count’s essential regalian right to mint currency, a cornerstone of medieval feudal authority and a testament to Luxembourg's growing autonomy.

Artistry: The anonymous engraver worked within early Gothic numismatic traditions prevalent in the Low Countries. Characterized by functional simplicity, the design typically features a central cross potent or similar variant on the obverse, often surrounded by a rudimentary legend. The reverse commonly displays a stylized initial, such as an "H" for Henri, or a simplified heraldic device. Artistic execution, while lacking intricate detail, effectively conveyed essential information for identification and validation of the coin's issuer.

Technical/Grading: Weighing 0.71 grams and measuring 16 millimeters, this silver denier is typical of its era’s small-denomination coinage. High-points for wear and strike quality include the center of the cross and any central monogram. Due to rudimentary 13th-century minting techniques, examples often exhibit an irregular flan, off-center strikes, and variable strike pressure. Legends are frequently incomplete or weakly impressed, especially towards the edges. Planchet quality can vary, sometimes showing laminations or minor imperfections.
