The monogram follows the standard Carolingian cruciform interlace design, with foliate or floral elements visible at the terminals. The circumscribed Latin legend PIVS * LVDOVVICVS I runs between the beaded inner circle and the outer rim, identifying the Frankish emperor. The reverse flan is similarly irregular, consistent with the hammered production technique of the period. |
