Obverse lettering GREGORIVS * SCS PETRVS
(Translation: Gregory. Saint Peter.)
Reverse description Central field displays the Carolingian imperial monogram of Louis the Pious (Louis I), composed of interlaced letters in high relief within a beaded inner circle. The monogram follows the standard Carolingian cruciform interlace design, with foliate or floral elements visible at the terminals. The circumscribed Latin legend PIVS * LVDOVVICVS I runs between the beaded inner circle and the outer rim, identifying the Frankish emperor. The reverse flan is similarly irregular, consistent with the hammered production technique of the period.
