| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing bearded effigy of Duke Godfrey III rendered in crude but expressive medieval hammered style, occupying the full field. The face is depicted frontally with a prominent beard rendered in stylized strokes below the chin, wide-set eyes with a central pellet, and a crown or diadem visible at the top of the head with decorative elements. The portrait fills the flan with no surrounding legend, consistent with the non-inscribed deniers of Lower Lotharingia. |

Godfrey III, known as "the Hunchback," ruled Lower Lotharingia under constant friction with Henry IV of Germany, who repeatedly sought to curtail ducal authority in the region. His reign lasted barely four years before his assassination in 1069 — stabbed, according to contemporary sources, while using a latrine near Antwerp. The circumstances made him something of a cautionary figure in medieval political literature.
Issues attributable to his brief tenure are scarce by any measure, the short window of production alone explaining why surviving examples appear so infrequently in trade.
