Obverse description A plain cross pattée divides the field into four quarters, each canton bearing a heraldic charge: a fleur-de-lis in the upper left and lower right quarters, and a passant lion in the upper right and lower left quarters, representing the arms of England quartered with France. An inner beaded circle frames the central device. The surrounding legend, rendered in uncial Latin characters, reads ED PO GEnITVS REGI AnGLIE, identifying Edward as the firstborn son of the King of England. The coin exhibits the typically irregular flan and bold, if somewhat crude, die-work characteristic of fourteenth-century hammered billon coinage.
