Eckehart I ruled Meissen from 985 until his murder in 1002 — stabbed at Pöhlde during a royal assembly, a killing attributed to a private feud rather than political conspiracy. His reign coincided with the aggressive eastward expansion of Ottonian authority into Slavic territories, and the margravate's coinage was as much an instrument of that consolidation as any military campaign. Deniers of this type circulated across a frontier zone where coined money was still partly a novelty.
The Dann and Kluge references place this firmly within the Ottonian bracteate transition period, before Meissen developed a truly independent minting identity.
